Born in 1960, Mario Brunello began his musical education with Adriano Vendramelli and continued with Antonio Janigro. In 1986, he was the first Italian to win at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. He played the first cello in Milan's Scala Orchestra and joined some of the world's most prestigious orchestras to play under famous conductors such as Carlo Maria Giulini, Valeri Gergiev, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa or Salvatore Accardo. He is also devoted to chamber music and cooperates with soloists such as Andrea Lucchesini, Gidon Kremer or the Alban Berg Quartet. In 1994, the cellist founded the Orchestra d'Archi Italiana which proposes a vast repertoire that ranges from classical to contemporary music.
He participates regularly in the Tokyo Summer Festival, the first time in 1987. For the 22nd edition 2006, he was invited to perform at the opening concert along with Ivry Gitlis and Michie Koyama. In autumn 2006, Brunello played together with Maurizio Pollini at the Lucerne Festival in Tokyo. Recently, he acts as a Guest Conductor of the Kioi Sinfonietta Tokyo.
Besides playing in usual concert halls he performs each year at the Italian festival "I Suoni di Dolomiti" taking place in the mountains and recently goes on cello-caravan tours through the Sahara.
In June 2007 he fulfilled a long-awaited dream: a cello-trekking on Mount Fuji. On top of Japan's sacred mountain the sportive cellist gave a Bach concert. In October 2007 he played the same pieces as on Mount Fuji in a cello recital at Sumida Triphony Hall.
Mario Brunello plays on a 17th century - Maggini cello, which earlier belonged to the great Franco Rossi.
