Music criticism contributes widely and socially to the improvement of the quality of musical culture. Our goal is to raise music criticism in the future by recompensing competent writers with the Minao Shibata Award.

The first prize of the Minao Shibata Award is attributed to excellent music critics. The prize consists of a certificate of merit and 600,000 Yen. Exceptionally, the prize winner receives 1000,000 Yen, if this is linked to an over-sea study scholarship. Applicants receive three discount tickets for the concerts

Minao Shibata (1916 - 1996): Composer, music critic, musicologist
While Minao Shibata enrolled in the science department and the literature graduate faculty of Tokyo University, he also studied the cello, piano, composition and direction techniques. Related to the founding of the Toho Gakuen School of Music, he educated numerous musicians and composers also at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo University of Arts and Music and Japan Women's University.
Working for the NHK, Asahi Newspaper, and in Europe, he developed musical journalism based on profound objectivity. From 1970 on, he was devoted to folk music and Japanese traditional music. By attributing his name to the award, Minao Shibata's achievements as a person and a member of the jury are highly honored.
