Music and Literature have attracted each other, created a tension with one another, and formed mutual intimate bonds since the dawn of history. In fact, literature has been necessary to music much more than the reverse, and before?Verlaine had a chance to pen the words "Above all, music", poetry existed as?"told" music. Starting with Berlioz' "Symphonie fantastique" and its sequel "Lelio", we?have turned our attention to the various aspects of the dialogue between music?and literature -- their fusion with each other and their alienation from each?other -- as we follow the myriad expressive forms in Aygi's and Gubaydulina's?dialogue and concert, the comparison of the original "Winterreise" and Hans?Zender's interpretation chamber music personifying the work of Proust, and?finally the tradition and modern interpretations of literature and poetry from?ancient times as seen in Japanese as well as Iranian traditional music. This festival, we are also for the first time experimenting with incorporating special participatory performances and related programs fitting with this year's theme.
