The theme for the Nineteenth Tokyo Summer Festival 2003 is "Ritual,Nature, and Music". Ritual has served since ancient times as a means for humankind to carry on dialogue with his natural as well as supernatural surroundings, and music has always been an important factor therein. This coming festival, we would like to reconsider the meaning of music as the catalyst of ritual and ceremony, and those cultures which have birthed and nurtured them.

Themed "Ritual, Nature, and Music",The Tokyo Summer Festival for 2003 which had been presenting performances in venues throughout Tokyo since 8 July, concluded on 28 July with a special performance by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

Through a wide variety of programs, we were given the opportunity to re-examine the depth and diversity of cultures which live on in the far-flung regions of the globe: from the first joint performance of Japanese drum masters Hayashi Eitetsu and Okura Shonosuke, to the quintessential Madagascarian guitarrist D'Gary and the healing rites of the Bara tribe, the beautiful artistry of "The Izanagi-ryu of Monobe Village", Chandralekha's latest work: the passionate "Sharira: Fire and Desire", The Gundecha Brothers demonstrating the essence of classical Dhrupad singing from northern India, the spirited dance of the "gods" (Orixas) in the religious ritual Candomblé of Brazil, and a piano recital by the promising talent Amir Tebenikhin from Russia.

For the second year in a row, performances to be held in conjunction with the festival's theme by interested parties were invited and this year included three "participatory" events and three "related" programs.
