Eitetsu Hayashi -- Japanese drum performer whose beats transcends time and space. Each pummel of his baton produces a moment of resonance with the spirit of nature. Famed Noh percussionist Shonosuke Okura on the "otsuzumi" drum also makes an appearance in their premiere joint performance free of creative constraints.
Wood and animal skins: The "taiko" (Japanese drum) has been an instrument producing a sound that echoes with the ancient spirits in the minds of men; as a tree rooted in the ground from the past, a sound which stirs the soul. Eitetsu Hayashi is a performer who plays the "taiko" as an instrument of our time. Studying traditional "taiko" style, he pioneered a "modern" style and has created a style which reverberates in the hearts of modern society. Hayashi is at the forefront as a "taiko" performer, but his appeal goes beyond being merely musical to being even mystical. If he is to be an artist in traditional way, he must remain within the sphere of his instrument's nature; however, his performance displays the memory of the ancient past simultaneously with a feeling for modern sensitivity, carrying his audiences to the outer reaches of his art. Shonosuke Okura is "otsuzumi" player of Nohgaku-Hayashi. Normally, "otsuzumi" is performed with leather fingerstalls; however Okura performs all pieces, traditional or modern, with his bare hands. The fingerstalls enable the player to produce a high-pitched strong sound, but at the sacrifice of subtle variations in tone. Beating "otsuzumi" with bare hands can severely damage the drummer's hand but at the same time it produces rich expression in sound. Each sound of Shonosuke Okura's performance is spirited and passionate. In addition to separate performances, a joint session of the two is also planned.
