From deep in the mountains of Monobe, a folk religion formed through a fusion of the indigenous "Shugendo" (emphasizing the actual physical aspects of asceticism) and "Ommyo-do" (an academic study based on astrology of Chinese) origin from ancient times. To be shown are the unique prayer rituals and dances; also an exhibit of "gohei", artistic instruments of prayer.
The Izanagi-ryu ritual of Monobe-son village, Kochi prefecture is part of a folk religion which has been passed down over the centuries. This very ancient form of ritual and its music (kagura) provides an important hint to understanding how the Japanese mentality was influenced by its natural environment. Similar rituals are believed to have existed in many parts of Japan, but almost all of them have vanished. The Izanagi-ryu of Monobe is important in that it retains a large number of traditional forms, and was designated as an "important intangible folk cultural property" by the Japanese government in 1980. However, the village population continues to dwindle, and the future of this cultural asset is in danger. Through this performance we hope to reconsider the basis of ceremony and ceremonial music as being a ritual of man communing with nature. As a part of this event, we are also planning an exhibit of highly artistic and delicately crafted "gohei" as well as a workshop in how to make them. Through this, we would like to experience a way in which "prayer" can exist in a form; the workshop is for all interested, including children.
