The essence of northern India classical singing, filled with both majestically stylized beauty and rich improvisations! In their first appearance in Japan as the musical heirs of the Dhrupad style of the late masters of the art, the Dagar Brothers.
The Gundecha Brothers, in their Japan premiere, are young masters of their art, "Dhrupad", a singing style representative of the Hindustani music of northern India. Dhrupad developed in the courts of the maharajas in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and conveys the austerity of an ancient style. Its majestic air is inspiring; however, the number of accomplished performers in this field is diminishing. In that light the Gundecha brothers, born into a musical lineage, are greatly anticipated as leaders of the next generation of Dhrupad musicians. Brothers Umakant and Ramakant were tutored under Dhrupad masters, the Dagar Brothers. They captivate audiences with their large repertoires ranging from Hindi classics to religious numbers and original pieces, and have been featured on radio and television broadcasts in India, the United Kingdom (BBC), Germany, and France. In addition to numerous recordings, they have also provided music for films. They have been recipients of a number of awards, including the prestigious Kumar Gandharva Award in 1998; awarded to musicians with the greatest number of achievements. They have made many concert tours and have appeared in a number of international music festivals. They are presently in the process of establishing the "Dhrupad Institute" in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (India). The group's percussionist Akhilesh Gundecha is well known for his adeptness in "Pakhwaj", a two-sided drum requiring a high expertise level. He not only accompanies his brothers, but also has had much experience performing with other Dhrupad musicians at music festivals both in India and abroad, and has received numerous awards from the Indian government. He is also quite active as a solo percussionist. In this performance, the three brothers will provide audiences with an opportunity to fully enjoy the beauty of highly refined improvisational "Dhrupad" performances.
