Aim of the Festival

The Tokyo Summer Festival, thought up by three musicians who joined hands to plan a truly international music festival in Tokyo at a time when there was no such event, is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. From the outset, it has been our intent to provide a rare setting in which the audiences and performers could mingle and share a rewarding experience.

For the first ten years, the themes of the Tokyo Summer Festival focused upon regional characteristics in music; however, following the fall of the ideological wall separating east and west, we found ourselves in a new era and thereafter focused on themes based on a symbiosis of cultures. Genres apart from the musical were also transcended, and through encounters among differing cultures, the sexes, and various races, we aspired to find a new form to our future.

Over these last ten years, unfortunately the world has not seen the advent of a peaceful era, with nations justifying their invasion of others, and conflict among races and nations continue in many parts of the world. Seeing the destruction brought about thus, we are forced to reconsider the importance of mutual understanding and acceptance of world cultures different from our own.

Musicians from six countries will gather for our twentieth anniversary. Mario Brunello and the Orchestra d'Archi Italiana as well as a special program for the Tokyo Summer Festival by Gergiev represent the talent expected to perform, and this year attention is paid to music from the Islamic sphere that is the product of the mixing of many traditions of various world cultures: Iran's classical music, the Algerian popular music "raï", and Pakistan's "qawwali"; all of these types of music which we could rarely have an opportunity to hear otherwise.

This is not to mention the star-studded cast of the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor", a posthumous exhibit of the work of composer Maki Ishii, who was closely connected with the Festival, and performances of young promising musicians. There is a colorful variety of sounds awaiting you at our festival's celebration.
