The 21st Tokyo Summer Festival 2005 was held based on the theme "Cosmos, Music, and Heart", featuring a total twenty-two performances of seventeen different programs between June 23 and July 28.
The Festival opened with the performance of "LICHT-BILDER" by pioneer of electronic music, the legendary Karlheinz Stockhausen in his first performance back in Japan after 28 years, being enjoyed by an enthusiastic and youthful audience.
The performances of world-famous conductor Yutaka Sado, one of Japan's most famous jazz artists Yosuke Yamashita, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra with Holst's "The planets" and Yamashita's "ENCOUNTER", Ensemble Modern with classics of the Twentieth Century to new commissioned works, recital by gifted eighteen-year-old cellist Gen Yokosaka's, piano performance and talk by composer/pianist Yuji Takahashi were also highly appreciated by all.
Extremely rare performances of the Mask Dance of the Dogon from the Republic of Mali, traditional singing from various Israeli ethnic groups and obscure chants from Iwate, Japan were also of note.
The Noh piece "Takahime" (based on Yeats'"At the Hawk's Well"), a workshop at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, children's songs sung by artist UA, and a lecture by Akutagawa Award-winning novelist and Buddhist priest Genyu Sokyu provided further depth in the theme by broadening the genre.
As in the previous year, there was a general invitation for performances by artists suitable to this year's theme, resulting in participatory performances by four groups and related performances by ten groups.
The festival concluded a success, providing abundant opportunities to experience stage performances with high levels of technique as well as rich musical tradition.

Aim of the Festival
The theme for this year's Tokyo Summer Festival is "Cosmos, Music, and Heart".
In recent years, as advances in science and technology have brought into light a new view of outer space, amazing coincidences have been noticed between the cosmology as expounded in religion or philosophy, and the universe of scientific fact.
Many ancient races of the earth have always known the cosmos to be a source of energy and that all things exist in a symbiosis with one another, and have expressed these themes of oneness with the universe in art and poetry, as well as in rituals.
Furthermore, Buddhism and other religions contemplate the form of the cosmos by looking inside themselves and through philosophy.
On this occasion, we hope that our audiences may enjoy the resounding of the human heart and mind, which serve as a magnetic field for the cosmos emanating the power of creativity, which is one form of its movement.
