The 22nd Tokyo Summer Festival 2006 was held based on the theme "Songs of the Earth / Music in the Streets", featuring a total nineteen performances of twelve different programs between July 5 and August 6. As in the previous years, the festival cooperated with a selection of performances suitable to this year's theme, resulting in five participatory performances and twelve related performances.
The Festival opened with the performance of a unique trio: the magic violinist Ivry Gitlis, the outstanding violoncellist Mario Brunello and Japan's beloved pianist Michie Koyama. For the first time together on stage, they assured an unforgettable opening ceremony.
The performances of the French Hip Hop dancers "Black Blanc Beur" in Yoyogi Park showed a fresh blend of high quality dance techniques and powerful street-dancing. The young and enthusiastic audience appreciated French, German and Japanese street performances in the relaxing open-air scenery.
Original Simauta from the southern Japanese Amami Islands, interpreted by Kazuhira Takesita, and Persian folk tales sang by Iranian's most popular transcendental vocalist Shahram Nazeri, provided further depth in the theme including various genres.
Gilles Apap and his group "Colors of Invention" reinvented Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" by varying between classical and folk music. Their appearance at the Parisian style "Café des Près" in Hiroo, where a discussion about music critique took place, was also highly appreciated by all.
The closing concerts were assured by the Senegalese super star Youssou N'Dour and Africa's most famous band the "Super Etoile de Dakar". The Grammy-awarded musician and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador made the Tokyo audience stand up and dance to his Afro-pop rhythms.
