The Music of Zanzibar: Taarab! |

Themed ¡ÈTowards the Islands - Sounds across the Sea", the 23rd Tokyo Summer Festival 2007 featured a total 21 performances of twelve different programs between July 2nd and August 5th.
The Festival started with a magnificent performance of the young pianist Shota Nakano, who played under the baton of Maestro Dan Ettinger, accompanied by the prestigious Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. The Japanese music scene of tomorrow was furthermore demonstrated by the performances of the gifted pianists Ryoma Takagi and Tomoki Kitamura who were highly appreciated by all.
Islands from around the world were represented by Icelandic composer and electro-acoustic musician Johann Johannsson who collaborated for the first time with Japanese fog sculpture artist Fujiko Nakaya. Living legend of Africa, 95-years old Taarab queen Bi Kidude from Zanzibar came along with the Culture Music Club and amazed the audience with her energy on stage. The Caribbean musicality was shown by two islands: Haiti and Cuba. The astonishing drums of Frisner Augustin, the leader of the Haitian Troupe Makandal created a festive atmosphere at Sogetsu Hall. Cuban guitarists and singers of the Nueva Trova movement contributed to the festival with technically sophisticated and beautifully interpreted songs that touched the hearts of the Tokyo audience.
Extremely rare spiritual celebrations from Tokyo's island Aogashima has been reproduced for the first time outside the island. Chants and dances from Tokyo's Ogasawara Islands completed the concert program with a tropical flavor. The festival ended up with a 3-days field trip to Hachijojima Island, where a symposium on Japanese island cultures was held.
As in the past, the Tokyo Summer Festival cooperated with a selection of performances suitable to this year's theme, resulting in five participatory performances and nine related performances. As a special participatory performance the Teatro Massimo di Palermo came for the first time to Japan.
